Choosing the right desk for your home office

The right home office furniture can make a huge difference to your outlook on working and productivity. The trick is to find the desk that’s right for the job and that’s why here at The Wooden Furniture Store we have desks to fit all sizes of spaces and all sorts of styles. Here are our top tips for choosing the best home office desk for you….

How much room do you have?

One of the biggest mistakes in choosing furniture is to overestimate how much space you have.  An empty home office looks huge until you put a desk and chair in! Measure the space that you have and take into account windows, doorways and radiators that your furniture will have to fit around.

The smallest desk is from our Vermont range.  The white wooden single pedestal desk only measures 122cm wide by 52cm deep.  Although the desk is small, it has lots of storage features – one cupboard which features a removable shelf, a handy stationary drawer and to maximise workspace, the desk has a fold out keyboard drawer.

To add design detail, the desk features tongue and groove back and sides and is finished with a seven step paint process to ensure a fresh but resilient finish.

If you have more space, what about the large hidden home office twin pedestal desk from our Mobel Oak office furniture range?  This desk is a spacious 171cm wide by 55cm deep and offers exceptional storage.  Firstly, the desk has a pull-out central keyboard drawer and two large stationary drawers.  The right hand cupboard has been designed to hold a PC tower unit, modem and wireless routers.  The left hand cupboard is designed to hold a printer and scanner and has an adjustable shelf; it also has cable holes at the back to allow for invisible wiring.

The desk is made from solid oak and features two tone brushed steel handles and is finished with a hard wearing satin lacquer.

The next question to ask is what is your budget?

As with anything, you can spend a small amount or a whole months pay on one piece of furniture.  How much you spend is up to you, although bear in mind that you may still need to decorate and purchase office supplies and computer equipment.

If you’re on a tight budget, what about the hidden home office from our Aston range? At under £450, it offers great value for money.

The hidden home office is an innovative design that allows you to disguise your computer desk and tidy everything out of side.  The desk features a pull out keyboard shelf to maximise work space.  On the right hand side there is a removable shelf to provide two storage areas, plus a central area housing two further drawers and on the left, there is space for a PC tower.  The desk has four pre-drilled pug holes to ensure that cables are hidden.

But if budget is less of an issue, what about our stunning twin pedestal desk from our premium Atlas range?

This is a substantial, contemporary piece of furniture which would make a great centre piece of any home office.  The twin pedestal desk has been specially designed to hide most of your computer equipment as well as providing you with some great storage space.  The desk has a useful pull out keyboard drawer which can also be used as additional desk space.

The left hand pedestal has four drawers.  The top three can be used for storage and the bottom one has been designed to carry A4 suspension files.  On the right hand side there is a single drawer and a cupboard that could be used to house a computer tower.   All the drawers on the desk are finished off with elegant oak handles.

And finally, choose your style – do you prefer antique styles or something a bit more modern?

If you like traditional mahogany styles, then you’ll love our La Roque range of Mahogany computer desks.  This single pedestal desk is designed for smaller spaces and is a beautiful piece of furniture that will be the focal point of your home office.  The desk is crafted to a very high standard and finished with a hard wearing mid gloss lacquer to highlight the woods beautiful grain.
